When using the ID card, you do not share more data than necessary with the store or business checking ID. The business only accesses the data required for verification. An example of this is when purchasing age-restricted items at Vinmonopolet. In this case, only the picture and age are displayed on the screen for the employee. This information is not stored by the business but is only shown for verification purposes.
More about data securityYou activate the ID card by following these steps:
- You must have installed and activated the BankID app in the latest version.
- Open the app and go through the activation process.
- You must have a valid Norwegian passport or national ID card to activate it.
We're working to make the ID card usable at more places, and we'll let you know as other businesses start using it.
In the initial version, you need a Norwegian personal identification number and a Norwegian passport or national ID card to use the service. This is because we use the Norwegian national identification number in the ID document to link it to the national identification number in the BankID certificate. These national identification numbers must match.
Our ambition is to accommodate foreign users and individuals with D-numbers (a temporary identification number) in the future so that these users can also use the service.
The ID card in the BankID app is a digital ID for use in physical situations. It can be used at the stores or businesses that have an agreement to use the service. Initially, this includes Vinmonopolet and Posten.
The QR code cannot be copied and used by others, as it can only be used once and expires after 30 seconds.
More about data securityThe ID card in the BankID app allows you to always have identification with you and easily show it at stores or businesses that have installed the system and have an agreement for its use. For businesses, it makes identity verification both quicker and safer, as the data displayed is validated by BankID.
We, BankID BankAxept, store data from the chip in your Norwegian passport or national ID card, such as your national identification number, date of birth, name, photo, document number, and expiration date. BankID BankAxept securely stores all data from the ID document used during activation. All data is encrypted, and only you can access this data when needed. The key to access the encrypted data is stored in your BankID app.
Data from the ID document is stored by BankID but can only be accessed by you.
Read more about data security in the ID cardWhen this feature is implemented in the app, you will be asked if you consent to sharing the data the business requests when the QR code is scanned. It is solely your decision whether the business receives this data or not.
To use the ID card in the BankID app, you need to have activated the BankID app with a valid BankID. Anyone who has it can activate the service by scanning a Norwegian passport or national ID card.
Your phone must support NFC (Near Field Communications) to scan a passport or national ID card. Most newer smartphones support this feature. If the phone works with services like Apple Pay or Google Pay, it will also be able to scan passports.
Apple users must have iOS 15 or higher, and Android users must have Android 7 or higher.
Yes, you can find an overview of where you have used the service and which data was displayed to the service provider under "See details" in the app.
When you press "Show ID" in the app, a QR code is generated that can be scanned at the cash register in the store or the place that needs to check your ID. When you need to create a new QR code, you must verify yourself using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN on your phone. The QR code is valid for 30 seconds or until it has been scanned. If you don't manage to scan the code within 30 seconds, you'll need to create a new one.
At launch, you will be able to use the ID card in the BankID app to authenticate yourself at Posten (Norwegian postal service) and Vinmonopolet (Norwegian alcoholic beverage retailer).
